High level of GGT (Gamma Glutamyl Transferase)

High level of GGT (Gamma Glutamyl Transferase)

My blood test results, including ALL liver test levels, Hypatitus, etc. are in the normal range, with the exception of GGT.  My GGT id at 77, and consotantly a bit higher than normal for the last 10 years.  All the specialist I have met could not tell what is the cause of this abnormality and how it should be treated.  Or maybe I should ignore it?  Any suggestions?

Although the GGT is fairly specific to the liver, there are other things that can cause an isolated elevation.  Medications like Dilantin or barbituates can raise the GGT.  Alcohol use can also do this.

I would suggest further testing to exclude liver disease - including an ultrasound and hepatitis studies.

If you are drinking alcohol, I would abstain and repeat the liver function tests.

You can discuss these options with your personal physician.

Followup with your personal physician is essential.
