How useful is an upper GI?

I am a 29 year old male, and about 4 years ago I got a large
piece of food stuck in my lower esophagus.  The emergency room
physician told me that the irritation may cause scarring which
could cause some future swallowing problems.  I sometimes get
food "stuck" in that same area.  A recent upper GI revealed a
small hiatal hernia and a small diverticula.  The radiologist
said that my esophagus was normal and that I did not have
Barrett's esophagus, which was my primary concern. The swallowing
discomfort is occasional and not a problem for me.  Would an
upper GI reveal Barrett's esophagus to some degree of certainty,
and could that original swallowing problem cause future problems?
Dear Rob,
An upper GI series is a good test to look for strictures (narrowing), masses or diverticula but is not as good at detecting mild forms of esophagitis (inflammation of the esophagus). It is very hard to tell if a patient has Barrett
