IBS and antibiotic use

After a persistant cough, I was prescribed CEFTIN which caused several days of diarrhea. Now I am having pain in the upper left abdomen and recently have had some diarrhea, indigestion and general feeling of unwellness. I am concerned that this is IBS and am trying to relieve the symptoms. Is it best to start with a diet free of whole grains, fruit, veggies to give the bowel a rest or should I be eating MORE of these?
If this is caused by the antibiotic use, can I expect it will pass or could antibiotic use cause chronic IBS?
I have had an ultrasound that was normal and there are no abnormalities in blood or urine tests. I have an appt. booked with a gasto-enterologist but it's not for several weeks.
This is severe enough that I have been missing work so I really want to get this sorted out ASAP. Can anyone help?

I have IBS and no matter what (for the most part) I try to stay away from anti-biotics.  Yes it does cause IBS to become more severe.  Well for me and a few other people I've spoken to about it.  My own experience is that it usually takes 7 to 10 days after taking anti-biotics, before my system gets back to its 'normal' state.  Everyone is different though.  For instance, you're talking about different types of food you may try.  I had to stay away from fresh veggies, grains and fruits.  It somehow made it worse.  But what worked for me may not work for you.  Take care and hopefully someone else will also share their experience.
