Various studies say different things.  Those with intestinal metaplasia has a 1-2x increased risk for esophageal or stomach cancer, depending on where the metaplasia is.  

As for the surveillence course, it would depend on how severe the metaplasia is.  It can range anywhere from every 6 months to every 3 years.  The pathology report from your studies should guide the follow-up course.
