Liver Enzymes

Liver Enzymes

I am a 46 year old female that has suffered from anxiety since I was 12.  I do admit that my anxiety has caused me to drink more than I should over the years.  I recently had my ALT and AST tested and my ALT was 18 and my AST was 22.  Since I am a hypochondriac, I am worried that these numbers mean something bad is going on.  My liver readings a year ago were ALT 17 AST 17. I did have one other reading years ago where my ALT was 18 and my AST was 21.  Can these numbers fluctuate from time to time?  I have no other symptoms of liver problems and all other bloodwork was normal.

I have, however, made a conscious effort to limit my drinking and seek therapy for my anxiety. Again, I'm worried that since these numbers aren't the same as they were last year it means something is wrong with my liver. Your response is appreciated.

The liver enzymes can fluctuate, and the numbers here are within normal ranges.

Alcohol can affect the liver enzymes - typically with the AST:ALT ratio being about 2:1.

If they are elevated, further evaluation can be done with a liver ultrasound and blood tests for hepatitis.  Since they are currently at normal levels, these tests can be deferred.

Periodic checking can be considered if you are concerned about elevation.

I have been having a high ALT count for the past 3 years.  I have been going through blood test and ultra sounds an MrI  and a liver Biopsy all which came up negative for any disease. Sometimes my count has gone up over 300 and most of the time it is about 230. All my doctors so far have not discovered what ails me .  I have moved recently and my new MD is senting me to a Digestive Disease Doctor to find out why my liver is putting out this high ALT count.
