Liver dissorder in conjunction with N.E.C in an infant

Just wondering if you could shed some light on a problem my child is haveing.  Last night he had surgery to repair a perforated colon.  In addition the doctor informed us that his liver has extensive damage.  Apparently this is not something that is normal in conjunction with N.E.C.  I know that the liver is regenerative; is there a good chance it can repair itself?  Also they had a difficult time stopping the liver from bleeding.  Is that normal.  Sorry the letter seems disjointed, but it was a very long night at the hospital.
  Thank you for your consideration,
  Kathleen Irish
