Liver varices

My 33 year old girlfriend just had an ultrasound done that showed enlarged veins in her liver.  She is not a big drinker (a beer or two a week); she is very healthy - excercises and eats well.  She has had pain in her upper middle abdomen for sometime now.

What could be the cause, what could be the diagnosis, and what should she do in the meantime?

Thanks.

There can be many causes for pain in the upper abdomen.  This can include GERD, inflammation of the upper digestive tract, an ulcer, or problems with the liver and gallbladder.  An upper endoscopy or an upper GI series would be a reasonable approach to these causes.

With the enlarged veins in the liver, you can consider further tests to evaluate the liver function.  This can include blood tests and a possible liver biopsy if the tests indicate a problem with the liver function.

Followup with your personal physician is essential.

Part II:

She has been experiencing tingling in her leg.  Could this be associated with anything regarding her enlarged veins in her liver??
