Liver....?

Liver....?

I went to my doctor about 2 months ago with symptoms like nausea, stomach pain, exhaustion, dizziness, and he ran a battery of tests. The latest was a set of blood tests and when he got the results he called me and said that a few of the liver function tests were higher than normal. He has booked me in for an ultrasound.

What is he looking for? And what is likely to be wrong, considering that I'm an otherwise healthy 20-year old who doesn't drink any alcohol, takes very few medications and has been vaccinated against hepatitis a and c???

KATY, HE'S JUST LOOKING FOR ANY CYSTS OR OTHER ABNORMALITIES. POSSIBLY BLOCKAGES IN THE GALL BLADDER. THEY'LL LOOK AT YOUR SPLEEN ALSO. WHEN YOU HAVE HIGH LIVER ENZYMES WHICH IS WHAT THE RESULTS SHOWED IT MEANS THAT YOUR LIVER IS UNDER STRESS FROM SOMETHING. MINE WERE HIGH DUE TO MONO AND ALCOHOL. BOTH WENT HAND IN HAND. I'M 26 YRS OLD AND HAVE HAD THEM FOR ALMOST TWO YEARS. I BOOZE LIKE A COLLEGE KID STILL THOUGH. MY HEP TESTS WERE NEGATIVE AND I'VE HAD TWO ULTRASOUNDS THAT SHOULD A HEALTHY LIVER AND NO PROBLEMS OR BLOCKAGES TO THE OTHER ORGANS. I QUIT DRINKING FOR 104 DAYS AND THEY WENT BACK TO NORMAL AND I RESUMED DRINKING AND THEY WENT BACK UP. I DO TAKE A BLOOD PRESSURE MEDICATION WHICH CAN ELEVATE THESE LEVELS BUT MY DOCTOR SAYS NOT TO WORRY. I COME TO THIS SITE IN HOPE THAT SOMEONE WILL TELL ME IT ISN'T THE ALCOHOL. ANYWAY I'D WAIT AND SEE THE ULTRASOUND RESULTS. DON'T STRESS IT AND IF YOU NEED ANY OTHER INFO I'D BE GLAD TO TRY AND HELP.

I started with fatigue, dizziness and general feeling of unwell.  The doctor sent me for test and after several months found I raised enzyme levels in my liver.

I was sent for an abdominal scan which should everything was normal.  After developing jaundice a liver biopsy was carried.

I had the shock of my life when they said they hadn't realised how serious it was and diagnosed me with auto-immune chronic active hepatitis.  They also said I had scarring of my liver which they caught in time.

Other than abdominal pain under my ribs I feel perfectly normal, but thank god I went to the hospital when I did.

I am now on 40mg of steriods daily and will be starting azathioprine on Monday, which I will be on indefinately.
