Lower Adomen Pain

My wife has a pain in her lower abdomen on the right side.  It is not a sharp pain and it isn't constant.  It comes and goes with no regular schedule.  It has been there for about 6 weeks.  It may have started after a physical exam that included a pelvic exam.  It is inside her body and doesn't seem to be muscle related.  She has no other symptoms out of the ordinary.  She eats fine and has been exercising 3 times a week.  I would appreciate any help in this matter.

Dear Paul,
Abdominal pain is frequently the reason people see their physician.  Many different conditions can cause pain in the same location and some diseases can produce pain in several different regions of the abdomen.  If you think of all the structures in the abdomen, it is evident that identifying the cause of pain can require many tests that can be invasive and uncomfortable.
Often the physician will try to look for other symptoms that may provide clues to the cause of pain or at the very least provide information that can direct the diagnostic investigations.  Pain of recent onset that is not severe is usually less worrisome than pain that has been present for months  and that is either increasing in severity or is interfering with normal activities of daily living.  Red flags that suggest disease include: symptoms of weight loss, loss of appetite, fever, change in bowel habits (including seeing blood), difficulty with urination, pain with urination, blood in the urine, and alterations in menstrual function.  Trauma or injury to the region of pain is always looked for by the doctor.
I hope that this information is helpful to you.
