Viral gastroenteritis would be the most common causes of acute vomitting.  More chronic causes can include pancreatitis, gallbladder disease, or anatomical abnormalities.

If the vomiting does not subside, an upper GI series can be considered to look for a blockage or narrowing (i.e. pyloric stenosis), as well as an ultrasound to evaluate the gallbladder.  Blood tests to evaluate the pancreas can also be considered.

Followup with your personal physician is essential.
