PASSING SHREDS OF FLESHY MATERIAL WITH BLOOD? HX: Colitis 10 years.

Hi Doc,  I was hoping you could answer if this is seen in Colitis?
I have been passing shreds of fleshy like substance with blood both
dark black/fresh red. I have had this happen before in the past. I have
had previous upper/lower endoscopies with biopsy. My biopsy showed
signs of Inflammatory disease. But, All in the past I have been told
I have Irritable Bowel Syndrome. I was wondering would you have inflammation
in irritable bowel syndrome. My doctor tells me that my biopsy shows
evidence of inflammatory disease. But, he is a neurologist! Should
I take his opinion over a Gastroenterologist.  Should I be concerned?
  Thanks for your help!
  Sincerely, Anneliese Reitz

Dear Anneliese Reitz,
In general terms, patients with irritable bowel syndrome DO NOT HAVE bleeding or inflammation on the biopsies.  Your symptoms are suggestive for inflammatory bowel disease.  You should see a gastroenterologist to sort out what is happening.
