Polycystic Liver disease

My sister in law has been diagnosed with above disease.  I see that this is hereditary.  I would like to know the following:
Where does this come from, mother and father?
Can it be detected early, even before symptoms occur?

Thank you.

I have polycystic liver disease also. Mine is bad. I was told it is hereditary and comes from both parents being carriers.
How bad is your sister in laws cysts?
I also have elevated liver enzymes in addition to the cysts so I suppose I will have to have a biopsy to find out the condition of my liver.
I tested positive for antinuclear antibodies and that could be a marker for auto immune liver disease. I dont know if it could be from some other auto immune thing.
Anyway, usually the liver functions normally with polycystic liver, they tell me. So, I hope your sister in law does well.
I dont know if there is a test they can do to tell if you have it earlier in life. I think one is born with the cysts in the liver , but they do not cause problems by filling up until later in life.. Did she have her kidneys checked for cysts also? I was told, usually cysts in liver and kidneys run hand in hand. As of my cat scan in May of this year, I didnt have any cysts in my kidneys.
