Polyp on gallbladder

Polyp on gallbladder

Hello Dr. Pho:

I have a polyp (size unknown yet) on my GB discovered after visit to ER from pain.  I've also had HCV for 25+ years with minimal liver damage and normal range enzymes.

My question:

Are polyps common and usually benign and is GB removal indicated when pain occurs?

Thanks!

It would depend on the size of the polyp.

Polyps smaller than 5mm can be observed.  Once they start getting larger, the concern for cancer grows.  5mm to 10mm polyps needs to be watched closely.  Polyps larger than 10mm normally requires surgery, as this may represent gallbladder cancer.

An ultrasound or CT scan can be considered periodically for further evaluation.

These options can be discussed with your personal physician.

Followup with your personal physician is essential.
