Possible ulcer or hernia??

Possible ulcer or hernia??

I hope you can help me with this. I've been diagnosed with GERD some time ago (took protonix, now on zantac). Lately, I've been experiencing a persistent heartburn feeling in my upper abdominal area, right underneath the sternum. When I press the area, it almost feels tender and I get a jolt of heartburn. I was wondering if this could possibly be an ulcer or hiatal hernia. I've never heard of being able to feel it on the outside before and it has me concerned. Please help. I'm seeing my dr next week, but I guess I just need some peace of mind until then.

Ulcer, hiatal hernia, refractory GERD, or upper GI inflammation are all possible.

An upper GI series or upper endoscopy are the recommended tests to evaluate this.  If negative, an ultrasound can be considered to evaluate the liver or gallbladder, or more specialized testing can be done with a 24-hr pH study or gastric emptying scan.

These options can be discussed with your personal physician.

Followup with your personal physician is essential.
