Pressure in pit of stmach

Pressure in pit of stmach

Hi -
I am 39 years old.  5'3 and 125 lbs.  I had a severe bout of asthmatic bronchitis back in the fall that lasted 2 months.  Ever since then I have had this pressure in the pit of my stomach right below my breastbone.  It feels like someone has their fist in the pit of my stomach and are pushing in.  Also, at times when I press on the area it is painul to touch.  I have had an abdominal ultrasound, a pelvic mri, and ekg, and and echo.  All have come back normal.  My md suggested Prilosec.  I took it for the 14 days and the feeling went away (or seemed to) Now 1 month after finishing the Prilosec the feeling is back.  When I apply my own pressure to the existing pressure it feels better.  When I get up in the am I put a bra on right away because it feels better.  (I am also small chested).  I have told my md that this continues to be a problem, but he says that all the tests have come back ok.  What could this be and should I continue to pursue it w/ my md?  Could it be my stomach or ulcer related?  Thanks for any help!  Tracy

At this time, I would suggest an upper endoscopy.  This is the most comprehensive evaluation of the upper digestive tract, and can evaluate for GERD, inflammation of the stomach and esophagus, as well as ulcers.

If negative, more specialized tests can include a 24-hr pH study to quantify the severity of GERD, or an esophageal motility study.

I agree with the Prilosec for now, but would follow up with the aforementioned tests.

Hi Tracy,

I was having the same issues, pain in my sternum. I went to a Gastroenterologist who performed an upper endescopy. It came back that I had GERD (acid reflux) and gastritis. They put me on Nexium but that didnt' help so now I'm on Protonix which seemed to help with sternum pressue.
