Question

Hello,

About 4 weeks ago I started having right lower back pain, around the iliac crest area. When I went to the PMD she did xrays and told me I was significantly constipated "much worse on the right side". I do have occasional constipation, nothing chronic in the past. I took 2 bottles of mag citrate and passed large amounts of liquid stool, minimal formed stool. I have also been increasing my fiber and using the Dulcolax Supp and the Miralax she prescribed with minimal formed stools.

I have noticed large strands of thick tan mucus. I have considered IBS but I have never suffered from diarrhea.

My question is, What would cause constipation the is predominatly on the right side? With my symptoms (constipation, lack of formed stools, tan mucus) could you provide me with some possible diagnosis.

A mass or stricture can lead to constipation on the right side.  Tan mucous and changes in the stool shape also can be caused by a biliary disease or malabsorption.

A colonoscopy would be a reasonable test to exclude these causes.  i would also consider an imaging scan, such as an abdominal CT, to exclude any type of inflammation.

Sending the stool off for culture and analysis, as well as looking for malabsorption, can be considered.

These options can be discussed with your personal gastroenterologist.
