RELAPSES

WHY IS CDIFF HARD TO ERADICATE. I READ THAT PEOPLE EXPERIENCE CONTINUAL RELAPSES. DOES THIS MEAN THAT SOMETHING ELSE IS GOING ON, DESPITE NORMAL BLOODWORK, COLONOSCOPY, AND CT SCAN. BUT THEIR STOOL SAMPLE, SHOWS EVIDENCE OF  C DIFF. HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE FOR GOOD FLORA TO GAIN CONTROL IN  THE BOWEL.

Relapses of C Diff most likely comes from reinfection.  Sometimes the bacteria can "hide" deep within the diverticula, where it may not be exposed to adequate levels of antibiotics.

There can be several treatment options.  One would be to try oral vancomycin.  "Pulsing" antibiotics in stronger doses can also be tried.  Other options would be to try binding resins, such as cholestyramine in conjunction with the antibiotics.  Another option would be the concurrent use of probiotics.

These options can be discussed with your GI specialist.

Followup with your personal physician is essential.
