RNA test waiting period

RNA test waiting period

Dr,
Last spring I found out a woman I had unprotected sex with for a couple of weeks had a previous boyfriend who is Hep C positive. I have done quite a bit of research on the issue and am nearly convinced that hep c is not a std unless there is anal or bloody sex (which I did neither) but I still worry. I tested negative for antibodies at 9.5 weeks post exposure and negative for rna at 10.5 weeks. An immunologist at the lab I tested at said something about 8 weeks as the absolute latest waiting period for an rna test that but I should consider testing again as per advice of the CDC that he had. My CDC findings said 4-6 weeks after exposure for diagnosis but they also had a document saying chronic hep c carriers may have a period of oscillating during the fist few months where the rna test will be undetecable periodically as antibodies develop. I noticed in the JAMA journal a chart depicting the possible oscillating scenario and it seemed that the oscillaring would stop at around 8 weeks. I believe I took one of the best tests. It was quantitative and qualitative because it could detect as little as 10 UI/mL. It is the Roche Cobas TaqMan HCV Test which seemed to have good reviews. I just now took another antibody test at 23.5 weeks from exposure. Do you think I need to get tested again at 6 full months or that I can be satified with my suspected negative test result on Wednesday? Also, what exactly is the waiting period after possible exposure for a conclusive RNA test for Hep C. I have had no legit symtoms (symptoms) except a side ache the other day and maybe a little intercostalitis above the liver (I am a light smoker and have extreme physical excerion at my job).

I think you have done all you can to exclude the possibility of hepatitis C.

Rechecking in 6 months can be done to be doubly sure.  Normally the incubation period for a positive test would be anywhere from 7-12 weeks, it can vary from patient to patient.
