Hello.  I recently donated blood with the American red cross
and about five days later I recieved a letter in the mail saying
there was an abnormality in my blood.  I had given blood about six
months earlier and my blood was fine.  But in this letter it said
I had high levels of Alanine Aminotransferase.  for them, an
acceptable level for a blood transfusion is 120 IU/L mine was 207 IU/L.
All other tests came back negative also.
I'm 18 years old, I'm an athlete and I love to lift weight.  I'm 6ft tall
and weigh 235lbs.  Last year I had my last Hepatitas shots.  I had a cold
for about 2 weeks before I gave blood and that day I don't remember taking
any Tylenol or sudafed.  I don't really know what to do,  I called my doctor
and she is out of town for a few days.  If you could please tell me about this,
and about what could have caused it.
              Thank You,
                   Jeremy

Well, I finally got an appointment with my regular doctor and she said she wasn't too
worried about it, but just to be sure she was going to retest my blood, for all
liver enzymes.  Well what she found was that the ALT level was even higher than before,
she wouldn't tell me just how high but she said it was high enough to concern her.
Now I'm really confused.

Hey you teenagers, No, I am not a teenager, but I am a mother with a 17 year old wonderful son.  I have hcv and he was exposed and his enzymes, what you call the aminotransferase levels, the alts were just under normal..called the upper limit of normal.. with other symptoms, I was concerned.  So, catch what you can early and know all you can. My opinion is to see the best physician possible who has access to the best labs, so there will be no uncertainty in your minds, like mine.  TEST all you can, with all the power of knowledge.  I am not saying there is anything there.  But. Is it better or not to know whats wrong with you?  I say, yes, so you can target your healing area to heal and then let go, don't be obsessive my friendly teenagers, like I used to be. TRY to let go; but dont be afraid of 'good accurate tests'.  Fear of the unknown is my gig. I try and try to let go. but its hard. Try to find a doctor that is supportive of your care.  If you take alternative medicines, like Milk Thistle which is one of many liver protectors, then please ask the MODERN medical man.  Tell him everything, ask the best doctor all the questions necessary to make you feel at home and then LET GO> help me let go too. Cause I'm right along with you.     NOTTE: That level of the Blood BANK is awfully high.  Why on earth do they say that?  And I thought from a Laboratory Article that the blood banks stopped using the ALT screening as there is enough screening out there.  1995...I LOVE you all...with all my heart..Sandy

Do you take proteins?  Any other weight-lifting, body-enhancing products?  This would be my first thought since you are athletic.  My son is also athletic and into body-building.  My son did protein shakes, both from Max Muscle and GNC.  Both supposedly harmless.  His white count went down to 2.4 and his liver enzymes were elevated.  Since he is off the protein shakes-all labs are back to normal.  Just a thought.....Good luck!  I found out that what is called anti-metabolites cause your body to not produce white blood cells.  They don't need to as you are putting these amino acids into your system so your system doesn't have to work.  I'm not sure what the analine aminotransferase is but if it has anything to do with amino acids, I would watch the "health-food products" you take.
