I have chronic bouts of distension and lower abdominal pain.
It occurrs every month like clockwork. I never have it during
my period or rarely the week following it. I get trapped gas so badly that I can barely bend over. I've had a colonoscopy done which didn't show any abnormalities. I'm trying to look at every angle.Basically here are my questions--- can hormonal changes in the body worsen a gastro problem? Or can a female problem cause bad gastro symtoms (symptoms)?    I have bouts of constipation and diarehha and I am on fibercon daily.  When I have this distension I also have pain and pressure in the rectal area and mucous with my bowel movements...

Studies have shown that estrogens alter the contractility of gastrointestinal smooth muscle in vitro (outside the body).  The hormones can also alter the transit of your gastrointestinal tract (that is the rate at which contents move along the length of your bowel).  However, you should not necessarily conclude that estrogens are responsible for your symptoms.  An appropriate series of investigations are necessary before concluding that hormonal changes are the cause for your gastrointestinal problems.
