Recently, and only recently, I've had a difficult time catching a deep breath.  It seems to occur throughout the day, but I sleep fine.  I wake up fine.  I eventually catch a deep breath, especially when I try to yawn, but it is frustrating and I wonder if I'm doing any damage to my lungs or other organs in the process.
I am a healthy, non-smoker, 39-year-old male. I do have sinus problems from time to time and also have problems swallowing food (it gets "stuck" going down).  That problems has been a bit more prevalent of late.
Any over the counter medication or anything else I can do?
Please let me know.
Dear Josh,
Some patients with gastroesophageal reflux have a difficult time catching their breath and difficult swallowing. On the other
hand, it would be important to rule out other causes such as asthma or seasonal allergies. If you are overweight you might want
to try and lose a significant amount of weight. Watching your diet and adhering to anti-reflux measures may also help. You can
also try over the counter antacids or antisecretory drugs such as ranitidine (Zantac 75), famotidine (Pepcid AC), cimetiidine
(Tagamet HB) or nizatidine (Axid AR).If these symptoms persist you should see your primary care physician for further
evaluation.
