I have collagenous colitis and have been diagnosed since 1985.  I have had good success with Asacol.  I have a spondyloarthropathy related to the colitis that my Rheumatologist wants me to take Methotrexate for.  My question is whether or not Methotrexate will cause me further problems with my Collagenous Colitis?
Thank you

Dear Shelly:
Thank you for your question regarding collagenous colitis and methotrexate. Methotrexate (MTX) has been used with some limited sucess in the treatment of other inflammatory disorders including Crohn's disease.  I found one article in the Australian NZ Journal of Medicine 1996 Feb 26(1):114 speaking to their experience with MTX and microscopic colitis.  It is doubtful that the use of MTX would exacerbate your condition.  Sincerely, FWR
