6 MONTHS AGO I HAD ROUTINE BLOOD WORK DONE. MY LIVER ENZYMES WERE ELEVATED. AST 101 AND ALT  92. I TAKE NO MEDICATION AND DO NOT EVEN DRINK SOCIALLY.  I HAVE NEVER BEEN DIAGNOSED WITH ANY DISEASES AND FEEL HEALTHY.  I HAVE HAD BLOOD WORK TO RULE OUT EVERYTHING THAT COULD ACCOUNT FOR THE ELEVATION, A GB ULTRASOUND AND A LIVER BIOPSY.  EVERYTHING HAS COME BACK NEGATIVE.  THE ENZYMES HAVE NOT COME DOWN AT ALL.  WHEN THEY DID THE ULTRASOUND THEY DID SEE A CYST ON MY SPLEEN. WOULD THIS HAVE ANYTHING TO DO WITH ELEVATED ENZYMES?  IS IT POSSIBLE TO HAVE ELEVATED ENZYMES WITHOUT ANY LIVER OR GALL BLADDER PATHOLOGY?

Dear Peggy,
We have seen patients who have normal liver biopsies but persistent elevations of the liver tests.  Presumably, these liver cells are intact but leaky ( allowing their contents into the blood).  It is difficult to know the
significance of the finding.  You should followup with your hepatologist at regulat intervals.
