My doctor wants to perform a endoscopy for possible ulcers and GERD. However I am scarred to death to have this done. I have been postponing it for 6 weeks. Is there a chance that I may die during this procedure. I am really scarred. Why do they have to take a biospy, will this interfere with my tissues.

An upper GI endoscopy is a very safe procedure in experienced hands. The risks of the procedure are reaction to medication, infection, bleeding or perforation. If a complication should occur, surgery may be required to correct the problem. Death is extremely rare. Complications are reported to occur at a rate of approximately one or two cases every two to three thousand cases (less than 1%). Small tissue samples called biopsies are commonly taken during this procedure. Sedation is commonly given during the procedure to keep you comfortable. The endoscopist will usually give you enough sedation so that you can tolerate the procedure while monitoring your vital signs. You should not be aware that a biopsy is being taken and it will not further damage your gastrointestinal lining. The areas quickly heal. It may help to speak to other patients who have undergone this procedure, keeping in mind that someone elses experience may be different than yours. Good luck with your endoscopy.
