I am 30 years old and have had GERD for 3 years now.  I currently take 150 mg. of zantac at
bedtime, 30mg. of prevacid 2x daily and 20mg. of propulsid
2x daily.  I still continue to have GERD, increased burping
acid coming back into mouth), food sticking in throat
and nausea with heartburn.  I had a endoscopy done which showed
severe esophageal redness and some polyps in the duct into my
gallbladder.  My doctor has said that my GERD is caused by a
esophageal motility disorder, which he said could be congenital.
I have also had esophageal spasms, that were very painful.
I can feel the heartburn through to my back.  I have adjusted my
diet in the past to no effect, so the doctor feels that eating
has nothing to do with it.  I get heartburn from drinking water
or eating oatmeal. I also have what is called "lazy colon" and
suffer from daily intestinal gas and chronic constipation.
My doctor has said he may want to do some more tests to study
the motility of my esophagus.  I have read a lot of information
about the nissen fundoplication and wonder whether that
can correct a motility disorder? Or, will I have to take
medication for the rest of my life and still suffer.
Could I become immune to the medication because I have been
taking so much for so long? I would almost be willing to go
through with the surgery if it would make me feel better.
