I was diagnosed with GERD in early October. Had symptoms of slight burning back of throat, hoarsness in late afternoon and early evening, feeling that something was stuck in my throat, sort of a dry sensation at times. felt my throat was closing up and would cause me to gag. Had Barium swallowq done, negative. ENT Dr. scoped my throat,, except for slight redness, unremarkable.Occasionally at end of meal will begin to cough until I cough up phlem (clowdy)then feel ok. Dr. put me on 5-6 meals per day with 1 tbspn Malox one hour after meals and three hours after. Gaviscon & Malox at bedtime. Did this for three weeks. Some improvement but still have the awful feeling in my throat. Dr. wrote for Prevacid 15mg/day. Now on second day. Are these classic symptoms of GERD? Does this throat dyness/stuck sensation go along with GERD? When can one expect medication to begin to relieve symptoms?

Dear Greg,
Esophageal reflux can cause symptoms of sore throat, laryngitis, cough and pneumonia.  To determine if your problem is reflux or another problem, I suggest that you have an esophageal motility study and 24 hr pH probe.  If there is no evidence for reflux or esophageal motor problems, then you should discuss the possibilities of other causes with your doctors.
