I would like to know what the purposes ( and or function ), of the alkaline phosphatase in the liver is.

Dear Karen:
Surprisingly enough, we dont know the exact role of alkaline phosphatase in the liver.  We think it may have some role in lipid absorption and transport but we really dont know for sure.  
The alkaline phosphatase level in the blood is often used as a marker for liver problems.  However, this lab finding has to be used with caution
because alkaline phosphatase is made by other parts of the body including bone and the placenta (during pregnancy).  An abnormal alkaline phosphatase has to interpreted in the context of an individual patients other symptoms and clinical findings as well as other liver enzymes.
