: : How is IBS treated in young teenagers?  My son has had severe abdominal pain in the center of his abdomen accompanied by diarrhea for about 5 weeks.  Blood tests and stool tests have all been negative including blood in the stool.  It has not effected his appetite even tho eating worsens the pain as does lying down.  He looks so tired but since he isn't losing weight, no one is too concerned.  The gastro doc, I assume due to no blood in stool, has determined by history that it's IBS and prescribed Levsin.  (Our GP gave me Symax and said to use Metamusil over the weekend, but it seemed to have no effect.)  The GI does not suggest a colonoscopy.  My son doesn't handle pain well and after 5 weeks, he's worn out.  (last night it hurt so bad he didn't go to sleep til 1:00AM) The doc says he should go to school (he's been out quite a bit) and that he should be allowed to use the toilet as often as needed.  He is worrying himself sick about it because he doesn't want special treatment for fear of ridicule.  Is Levsin fairly effective?  Are anti-anxiety meds like Buspar and/or psychiatric therapy ever needed for these kids?
By the way, what if the Levsin doesn't work?  So far, it doesn't seem to be doing much after 3 doses.
