Two and a half months ago I noticed that I was eliminating very very loose stools but thought nothing of it.  As time passed, I developed a constant dull ache in the stomach area and have been unable to get rid of the problem.  My doctor has since ruled out Lactose Intolerant, parasites and bacteria (through stool examination) and I have gone for a blood test.  This problem persists almost 2 1/2 months later.  I am NOT on any new type of medication and have not changed my eating habits.  I am fine for approximately 4 or 5 days (fine meaning no loose stools but the cramping doesn't subside, it continues even though I don't eliminate.  During this "fine" period, I have lots of gas, I am bloated and my bowel movements appear to be normal.  Then for no apparent reason, the cycle resumes and the stools are loose with gas and bloating).  I have also noticed that when I am eliminating loose stools, I eliminate partially digested food.  I know that there are certain foods people cannot digest (corn for example)but I noticed foods that normally I do not have a problem with, such as black olives and carrots.  The food is not broken down at all.  I have had no fever that I am aware of nor have I passed blood, but I have noticed what I suspect is mucous.
I am scheduled for a Barium Enema next week.  My doctor palpated my stomach area and can't feel any abnormalities. Is this Ba Enema a necessity.
I should also point out that colon cancer, Crohn's disease runs in the family.  Any suggestions as to what this may be?????

Dear Suzanne,
The fact that you have been symptomatic for 21/2 months is sufficient justification for investigation. There are several different ways to work up your problem.  A barium enama will exclude many colonic diseases and a small intestine barium study will exclude intestinal Crohn's disease.  Thereare reports that colonscopy is more sensitive than barium enema in diagnosing superficial ulcerations from Crohn's disease, but I think that local availability is the best factor in deciding which test to have.   In summary, I think that you should have the tests done to make certain that you do not have a disease which requires specific treatment.
