: I am a 28 year old female.I am 5'7" tall and weigh 185 pounds.I have three children 5,2 and 6 months. I am currently breastfeeding and my menstrual cycle has not resumed yet. My problem is that I have been nauseated for about the last 10 days. Its very similar to the type of "morning sickness" I experience when Im pregnant. It comes and goes all day and can range from just queasy to feeling ready to vomit. I have not thrown up. It got the worst on Easter after eating way to much fatty, sugary foods. My bowels seem to be normal, one or two soft movements a day,no diarrhea or constipation.I also have alot of lower backache but my Dr. thinks its just that and unrelated. Also, I have a tender spot above and to the left of my navel that at times is tender to the touch and feels "hot" inside, this comes and goes.I went to the Dr. on Monday. I was very worried about ovarian cancer. She gave me a pelvic exam and ,noting I had a pap 4 months ago and several ultrasounds in my recent pregnancy, ruled that out. I was told to come back next week if I havent improved. Also, I have been pretty gassy. But someone told me to drink alot of milk, could that be the cause of the gas? And Ive been pretty burpy too, even first thing in the morning? Ive put myself on a total bland diet for the last 3 days, its helped some but not completly. So I have 3 questions:                                                                1.Is it possible that this could be related to hormones?(oh! I had a blood preg. test--negative.)
:          2. I have been eating alot of junky fast food and sugary chocolate and stuff for the past couple of months, Ive gained 10 pounds. Could this just be my stomach rebelling?
:          3.What tests do you think I should ask for if I go back in on Monday? I usually get told its just stress from having three kids etc.etc whenever I have a problem. I do have Anxiety disorder.        THANK YOU very much for your time.

Dear Tina,
The relatively short duration of your symptoms makes guessing at possible explanations difficult.  The gas that you experience may be the result of lactose intolerance.  Eating junk food could also be a contributing factor for your symptoms.  If your symptoms persist at the time of your next visit you shoukld ask the doctor about having an upper GI x-ray to exclude structural causes and a radioisotope study to assess gastric emptying.
This information is presented for educatioanl purposes.  Ask specific questions to your personal physician.

I just wanted to add that I did go back to the doctor and he diagnosed me with GERD. I was wondering if you ever see nausea as a main symptom of GERD? Hes also doing alot of bloodwork to check for other stuff. Also, he prescribed Zantac and I was wondering if you thought that was ok while nursing? Ive read mixed thoughts on it and Im not sure what to do. THANKS AGAIN!

Hi Tina,
I too have been suffering from nausea for the past 8-10 days.  I am a 30 year old female with three children (5, 3 and 8 months).  I am not nursing and am not pregnant.  I have been suffering this queezy stomach on and off for over a week now.  I just stopped my birth control pill about 6 weeks ago and I am wondering if I have some sort of hormone imbalance.  I can't seem to find out much information about hormone imbalances and was wondering if you knew much about it.  I am also wondering if this is just not GERD, but I don't want to take any medication because I have been advised by my liver specialist to stop all medication, as I am having some problems with elevated liver enzymes which appears to be medication induced.  I don't get the burning sensation that is often associated with GERD and I too am questioning if nausea is a symptom of GERD, in the absence of any other symptoms.
Hope you start to feel better soon.
It's so hard to be feeling so crumby with three little ones to look after!
Lisa

Hi, I just stumbled upon this board when I used the search engine, askjeeves.com to see what could be causing my symptoms. I have many of the same symptoms as you both do AND I have lost weight -30 pounds since January because I could not eat well at all! I notice that eating fatty and sugary foods seems to induce the  nauseous feeling also. But my question is: Why, what makes one feel nauseous. Another girl's story described a sensitive area near her ribs on the left side; I have the same tenderness on my left and right side just under my breastbone. I also have some tenderness right in the middle of my sternum. I saw a docotr a few weeks ago and he suggested that I have an ultrasound of my gallbladder and pancreas, some bloodworkup and an Upper GI. Problem is  is those tests are extremely expensive. I have no health insurance right now and only make 229 every two weeks. I tried getting help from the clinics, but because my boyfriend makes 3-4 times what I do, they won't help. So, another question:Does anyone know of how I can get the tests done and paid for- My father already gives me enough money to pay my bills and asking him for 500 dollars just for the tests is out of the question! (The rest of my family is not able to help) Thanks!

Sorry to hear that you are not feeling so well either.  I am not a doctor, but I would recommend that you try to get that ultrasound done of your gallbladder and pancreas, and possibly liver.  I complained of a dull ache for two years in the centre and right side of my abdomen right below my sternum.  As well I had some nausea after eating fatty foods.  Given my age at the time of only 28, my GP didn't think it was anything serious and did some basic bloodwork, a barium swallow and a chest x-ray which all came back normal.  He then told me it was either inflammation or stress.  When I was pregnant with my third, the obstetrical ultrasound picked up many tiny gallstones.  After I had the baby, I had my gallbladder removed and now have no more pain or tenderness.  My G.P. couldn't believe that I had so many stones, given my age and the fact that I was not overweight.
I would recommend that you try to find someway to have the tests done.  I can't give you any advice on how to come up with the money for them, as I live in Canada and our health system pays for these sorts of tests.
Good luck.
Lisa

I have been suffering from chronic nausea for the past 6 years, ever since a hyperemesis pregnancy.  The nausea just won't go away.  I have been worked up from head to toe by dozens of docs, including the Mayo Clinic, UCLA, Cedars-Sinai, Loma Linda University, etc.  Head CT, CATscan, barium swallows, upper GI scopes, laparoscopy, ultrasound, hormone assays and the list goes on.  I have tried EVERY anti-nausea drug in the PDR.  NOTHING WORKS and I AM SICK OF PLANNING MY LIFE AROUND MY NAUSEA.  My nausea is like clockwork, very cylical within certain days of my menstrual cycle.  Only positive test I have had is an abnormal EEG (left temporal slowing), but epilepsy was ruled out.  They think it might be abdominal migraine.  Anyone have any suggestions?

I had chronic nausea also, I had a lot of tests (all negative) and I got better only after my visit to a naturopathic physisian (ND). He gave me herbs and it really helped. It will not hurt to try it.

Just found this and I can't believe the systoms you all have.  I have been doctoring for this for several years and it is all the systoms of gallbladder trouble and gallstones.  But they have done tests upon tests and I have no gallstones.  I have this nausea that just won't go away and several times pain under the right rib cage.  Burping also and several times when leaning over bringing up bile,  I guess.  Gallbladder trouble runs in our family and I am at my wits end about this as I just feel no good.

i have similar symptoms although, as a male, i have no possible correlation to menstrual cycles or pregnancy/breastfeeding.  I am nauseous all my waking hours with pain in my right side just at the bottom of my rib cage and in the spot where the stomach meets the esophogous.  have had all tests in the last 4 months and the only result was sludge in the gall bladder. blood work is fine/CT scans normal/endoscopy normal.  had esophogitis a year ago and still take prevacid daily.  dont have much heartburn and almost never actually throw up.  recently, i have developed a constant mucous build-up in my throat that makes me feel like i will vomit everytime i eat.  have not lost any weight though.  doctors all think it is stress and have me on mood stabilizers since the condition is making me quite anxious and depressed.  havent felt normal in 5 months!  any ideas?
