I wrote to you concerning by bout with polyps (hundreds) and colonoscopies every 6 months. You wondered if these were adenomous, and they are. New ones appear at each colonoscopy, there are still many left, as my gastroenterologist can't remove them all at once. Who would you refer me to, and to what hospital would you recomend I go to if I have to have a colectomy. Topeka and KC are within 2 hrs of where I live. I do want the latest technology, from what I know and have read, a colectomy is my next step, but I do not want an illeostomy bag. What are my chances of getting colon cancer if I don't have surgery?
Dear Theresa,
More than one hundred adenomatous polyps in the colon fulfills the criteria for the diagnosis of familial adenomatous polyposis (FAP). In FAP there is almost a 100% chance of developing colon cancer at a young age. Your best bet is to go to the nearest university hospital or medical school near your area for consultation with a colorectal surgeon.
