Just last night I woke up with a very sharp pain in my stomach in the middle of the night.  The pain was along the area below the belly button ( the navel I guess).  I don't think it was food pains because they felt sharper.  Anyway applying some light pressure on it relieved the pain.  It's pretty much gone, but I've never had this happen before and want to know what it could have been.

Dear Jane,
Abdominal pains can be due to a variety of causes.  Problems of the gastrointestinal tract, kidneys, abdominal muscles, spine and chest can all cuase belly pain.  In general terms isolated episodes of pain do not indicate chronic illness.  Usually these rare pains are related to eating food that "disagreed' with you.  If you have recurrence of the pains, then you should look for factors that appear to be initiating causes e.g. specific foods, activities. You should see a doctor if the pains become more frequent.
This information is provided for educational purposes and should not replace evaluation by your prinary physician.
