My mother is 55 years old. She has been having various aches and pains specificaly in her legs. She had a checkup done and the doctor wanted to try harmone replacement therapy but told her to have various test too. The ultrasound showed that the gall bladder walls had thickned but there were no stone. The doctor said it was Adenomomatasis of the gall bladder walls and sugessted surgery to have the gall bladder removed. Is surgery necessary ? Is this cancerous ? My mother does not have any stomach pains though she does have a lot of gas and constipation. Could you please advise. I am very worried? (My mother is in India ).

Dear Jay:
Thank you for your question pertaining to thickening  of the gallbladder wall on ultrasound.  Dr. Pravin  has provided a good explaination of the possible etiologies.  In most instances the cause of thickening is either chronic inflammation or as suspected in this case adenomyomatosis (benign).  I would follow the advice of your mother's physician and move ahead with recommended cholecystectomy and agree that a laparoscopic removal is an good option.   Thank you, FWR
