About 1 1/2 months ago I had a lap nissen done.  I am still having the same symptoms for reflux as I previously had to the surgery!    The symptom is intense sour taste in my  mouth at night,  little at day.  Some nights I have to sit up for a while to ease it. My doctor has me on 40 mg. of Prilosec recently.  I also take .25 mg of Xanax every 6 hours as it seems to "calm" things and let me sleep longer. (I used to take it only during PMS).  My doctor had said that when I had the Ph test done, previous to surgery,  I had one of the worst cases of reflux he had seen (off the charts).  I had all the necessary tests done previous to surgery, gallbladder, PH moniter, mamonetry, endoscopy(mild gastritis).  I asked my surgeon if he had  wrapped it tight enough,  and he said yes ,if it were any tighter, I would have problems the other way.  I can barely burp now.
Sounds like we are all at a loss as what to do?  Is this something that takes time,  or can it possibly be my tense life?  (widowed, 2 young kids ,one with ADHD, no support etc..I am 47 years old)  HELP!!!  I am tired of waking up each night having to clean out my mouth and lose sleep!!  THANKYOU!!!

My first incident with reflux was at work - when I thought I was going to vomit - - and thought I may have ulcer - -I too had a very tense time  - job etc.  I came to find out I had a hiatel hernia - - I do not sleep laying down - I have never been able to handle orange juice, wines most time, hard liquor, or most types of tomato sauce - - mexican doesn't bother me - -I have been off six weeks due to     major surgery - (not gastro)and no problems going to bathroom - guess what start back to work, sitting at computer all day - and bingo - -As for the reflux Doctor told me to take gaviscon - which was a blessing - -and I take zantac at night - however I hardly have a problem anymore so sometimes forget it - It is strange that you mention beef - that would start off my gallbladder - but since it has been removed - a GI told me that beef is heavy with protein requiring the guts to work harder- - I stay away from beef - not especially for that - but my tummyis happier without it - I will have pork, which does not give me a problem, nor fish - but beef does bother me - - I find for 25 years I fought to keep my gall bladder - one good thing my trigriceride is only 90 - ps - I don't eat anything fried either - -

Hi, Carol.  I had reflux surgery done in February and my "wrap" came loose and now I am told I have to redo the surgery. The surgeon told me that he was a little conservative with the surgery because my esophagus does not work properly.  He was afraid it would be too tight and I would never swallow solid food again.  It did work for about two months and it was heavenly not to have acid.  I was averaging 2-3 hours of sleep a night because of the reflux. I had ulcers (and still do) in my esophagus, but for a time they were not bothering me.  Maybe you should have an endoscopic exam done, so they can tell what is happening.  Good luck to you.  I know how frustrated you must be.  Also, it sounds like you are under a great deal of stress.  I believe this just intensifies the acid. Take care.
Monica

Carol,
My advice to you is to seek a second medical opinion.  I too have refulx problems; I'm 28 and have Barrett's Disease.  I underwent the nissen procedure last September (toupet wrap).  I'm starting to have problems again with chest pain and other reflux symptoms.  I would suggest you see another physician and have the 24hr Ph monitoring done.  I think endoscopy would be a smart move as well.  Don't be afraid to switch docs, I've been to 7 gastro's in the last 10 years.

I am 1 month post lap nissen, and my symptoms are also beginning to return.  I had atypical symptoms, chronic throat clearing, sore throat, hoarseness, chronic sinus infections and aspiration of acid into my lungs.  Well, the throat clearing is back, and I am now having heartburn, and I also have aspirated acid into my lungs again.  My lungs hurt, and I am short of breath.  I, too, am very fearful that the surgery may not have been successful.  Could these symptoms just be temporary?  I was on Prevacid before the surgery.  My surgeon has put me on Pepcid AC for now to see if that helps.  I really don't want to have to go back on the Prevacid!!  Anyone with thoughts on this?  I could surely use the help!
