For the last couple of months, I have been having pains in my
left abdominal area just under the rib cage? some of these pains
are severe and then they fade away. My most noticeably painful
episode lasted about a minute and a half and started to fade away
as I ate (I hadn't eaten anything in about 5 hours). I have been
having frequent bouts of acid indigestion also.  My pain is
sometimes so uncomfortable at night that I have trouble sleeping-
can't find a comfortable position!
I was wondering what possible problems might be causing this? I am
not aware of anything on the left side just under the last rib.
If it were on the right I would automatically think appendix, but
I am at a loss and can't afford to just go to the doctor to get
a complete line of tests (NO INSURANCE)!!
thanks for any info you have.

Dear Lisa,
SDtructures that can cause pain in the left abdomen under the rib include stomach, colon, small intestine, kidney and spleen.  A detailed history, physicial examination and laboratory tests would be needed to help define the cause for your pain.
