Over the past 8 months I have had three instances that
span about
three days where by spool has blood in it.  I've heard
this can
be a symptom for cancer so I figured I inqure about
it.  I have
no other symptoms at all regarding colon cancer, just
the bloody
bowel and it has only occurred every three months or
so so it's
spread out.  What do you think.  I'm only 20 years old.
Thank you
for your reply.
Dear Rick,
Anal outlet bleeding (secondary to hemorrhoids or a
fissure) usually presents with bright red blood per rectum
or with blood on the toilet tissue. Blood mixed with the
stool implies a higher source. Although colon cancer is a
possibility, it would be unusual for colon cancer to occur
in a twenty year old. There are however, other possible
explanations for blood mixed with the stool in younger
patients (for example: inflammatory bowel disease). You
might benefit from evaluation by a gastroenterologist and a
test called flexible sigmoidoscopy (a test where a tube and
a light are advanced up the left side of the large
intestine to see if a source of bleeding can be
identified). I hope you find this information helpful.
