I wrote on October 11th reguarding colon polyps. I had one polyp removed and I am unsure of the size. I have one family member who was my great grandmother on my fathers side who died of colon cancer. I had a flexible sigmoidoscopy done about 6 months ago, and he found nothng. I am kind of leary, however, as I think the doctor didn't do a thourough job with the test. It was done by my general practice doctor, and the test was extremely painful, and it only took 5 minutes. Should I have a repeat test done?
I am starting to feel more and more tired and weak as time goes by, and my diarrhea is getting worse and also has blood mixed with it from time to time. I don't know if that could be related in any way to polyps. I would appreciate any advice. I don't have insurance and would like to know what I should do before I have any costly tests done. Thank You.

It is more important to know the histology (pathological type) of the polyp than the size. If the polyp is an adenoma, then a colonoscopy should be performed to rule out other similar lesions throughout the colon. If the polyp is hyperplastic further intervention is not necessary. It would be highly unlikely for the diarrhea to be related to the polyp. Larger polyps can bleed but most often polyps are asymptomatic. If you are unsure as to the thoroughness of your recent flexible sigmoidoscopy, you should obtain a copy of the procedure report and schedule an appointment to see a gastroenterologist. He or she can analyze this report and explain to you whether or not the procedure was adequate for colon cancer screening. Since your symptoms persist you may require further evaluation and testing.
