Dear L.G.:
A gastrojejunostomy is a surgical procedure in which the stomach (gastro) and the upper small bowel (jejunum) are sewn to each other. An -ostomy is a general term for an artificial opening, or connection, that is created between to hollow organs. Ordinarily, the stomach is separated from the jejunum by the first portion of the small bowel, the duodenum. When there is a blockage in the duodenum, or when part of the stomach has to be removed, a gastrojejunostomy can be performed in order to bypass the duodenum. Sometimes, the duodenum (or part of it) is also removed.
As you can now deduce, a jejuno-jejunostomy is when an artificial connection is created between two parts of the jejunum. This can be done perhaps to bypass a blockage of the jejunum that occurs between the two jejunal segments of the ostomy. Sometimes, the term is used for certain surgical bypasses after removal of part of the stomach.
There are many uses for gastrojejunostomies, and other intestinal bypass procedures. In some cases, the duodenum is removed, and in others it is retained in the body. I cannot tell you the specific benefits of the operation without knowing exactly which operation is planned, and the condition for which it is being proposed.
May I suggest that you ask your personal physician -or surgeon- these important questions.
