I have recently been diagnosed with gastroparesis, after four months of epigastric discomfort, full feelilng after eating small quantities.  In my research into this condition it has been mentioned that being hypothyroid can be a causitive factor.  I am not diabetic (as often seems the cause) but  have been hypothyroid for 10 years.  How is this established as a cause?
Four years ago,  after similar symptoms, I was diagnosed with Esophogeal Reflux and took Losec for 10 days each time symptoms were flare.  I am now wondering if I haven't had delayed gastric emptying  all along.  I have lost 16 pounds and find it very difficult  to know what I can and cannot eat - even avoiding fats. Any advice?

please respond..how is gastroparesis diagnosed? i have had upper gi, colonscopy, small bowell biopsy, all negative. i do have reflux and hiatal hernia, but drs do not think it is responsible for my symptoms of loss of appetite and intermittant diarrhea. i am at a loss as to what it could be and am feeling desperate to find a cause so that i can resume a normal life. i have been recently diagnosed with "double depression" which i believe is a direct result of feeling bad for so long. i have lost 38 lbs. and was already small to begin with. i was perfectly healthy before all this began. it has been going on for some time. also, what is secretory diarrhea? is this a possibility in my case? any suggestions or advice would be greatly appreciated. thanks, mojo

well, i found a web site on the subject and it doesn't sound like it would be a likely cause. it may explain why i'm able to eat so little, but not the diarrhea. and i have nausea but rarely vomiting. so much for that theory! mojo

Problems involving the Autonomic Nervous system can cause gastroparasis. While you don't have IBS, it's interesting to note that  DR. Low, an Autonomic specialist with the Mayo Clinic has indicated that some IBS diagnosed patients , actually had a problem with their Autonomic nervous system....Remember, gastroparasis can be caused by a problem with the nerves that assist in food digestion...Just a thought...

ahhh! dysautonomia? this is what the doc has me taking klonopin for, he never mentioned it as a cause for the intestinal problems, and i never suspected that it could be related. thanks for the insight. mojo
