I am 29 yrs. old and was recently diagnosed with familial combined hyperlipidemia.  Over the past couple of months, I have been able to drastically reduce my triglycerides from 2500 to 300.  I am looking for information regarding high triglycerides and pregancy, recognizing that triglycerides generally increase during pregancy (usualy the third trimester).  I would also like information regarding the likelihood of pancreatitis during pregancy, as well as the treatment and risks associated with it. Are there any medications that are safe during pregnancy?  My doctor has recommended plasmaphoresis in the event that my triglycerides increase to dangerous levels.  What are your comments?

TopicArea: Hi Triglicerides (triglycerides)
I am someone who has suffered from extremes in triglyceride levels.  I have upper right quadrant pain and also suffer from cystitis.  I found that when I stopped taking vitamins or medications, such as antibiotics that my triglyceride levels dropped to half of what they were.  I believe this has something to do with the pain in my liver.  The doctors have not been helpful to me at all.  Research into holistic medicine, and get off of any medicines you may be taking which could be elevating your triglycerides, at least that is what I did, and it helped me.  Good luck!

I too have been diagnosed with extremely high TG.  My doctors immediately took me off various medications (including birth control pills), put me on a fat restrictive diet (reduced fat calorie intake to 20% of total calories) + exercise program.  I have had great success in decreasing my TG levels.  It is my understanding that high TG can put you at risk for pancreatitis -- which can be a very serious (it can be fatal) condition.  The symptoms of pancreatitis are abdominal pain (often mistaken for appendicitis), fever + vomiting.  If you have further right upper quandrant pain, you should be careful.
