I recently read the letter from Jansen regarding propulsid, and it has me very concerned.  I have been on the drug for about 8-10 years.  I tested the drug in Boston before it was approved, and continued receiving the drug after approval.  My biggest concern is if there is any long term effect, but I'm sure that would be hard to answer since I am probably one of the longest users.  My diagnosis was upper gastrointestinal muscle disorder, with very slow gastric emptying, back in 1989.  The drug worked great for me.  I took myself off the drug on Saturday after reading info on it.  Are there any other drugs that work just as well as propulsid. Since I was on the drug so long, should I see a cardiologist to make sure I didn't do any damage.  I think at one time or other I did take some of the drugs that are listed that you shouldn't take while on propulsid.  The only side effects I had that I know of was anxiety with heart palpitations.  I had pushed that off to PMS? I really would appreciate any input anyone has regarding this.  Thanks so much.
Dear Nancy,
Cisapride (Propulsid) is a drug that is well tolerated by many individuals. The warnings that have recently been issued are not new. In patients with underlying heart disease and abnormal heart rhythms or palpitations the drug should be avoided or used with caution. Furthermore, with patients on certain drugs such as certain antibiotics, antihistamines and anti-fungal drugs, cisapride (Propulsid) is contraindicated. The combination of cisapride with these drugs can cause abnormal heart rhythms that can be fatal.
I agree with your gastroenterologist. You had been on cisapride for quite some time with good effect and good tolerance. Unless you have a contraindication to the drug, there is no reason for you to continue avoiding cisapride (Propulsid) and having symptoms. Good luck with your endoscopy.
