Sounds like a Hiatus hernia/GERD/IBS condition to me, I had/have the same symptoms and the only relief comes from eating well and taking the correct medications that will improve the situation.
My experience with Bentyl is not all that great! It just didn't solve the problem.
Not eating at least 5-6 hours before bedtime will help and also a sedative (such as Ativan,Xanax, or Klonopin) will help for sleep.
For pain, Darvocet-N 100 works wonders for me and has helped me get through many painful days at work.
It is a tough diagnosis and not one that easily can be fixed unfortunately!!

Heather,
My heart goes out to you and your family.  Our son was diagnosed with irritable bowel syndrome about a month ago, but it's been going on almost 3 months.  First they said it was nerves, then a virus, then GERD, then gastritis, then we went to a specialist.  My son is a strapping football player sized kid and was in no obvious distress at the time, so the doc took one look at him, said it was IBS but characterized it as a little tummyache.  I'd like for him to sit up with my son til 1:00AM in the morning as he paces because of the pain.  My son has never cried much, but he has over this.  Especially after hurting all day and not being able to sleep at night.  My son is not a good student and has missed 6 weeks of school.  The pediatric gastro doc wouldn't sign the form to allow the school system to supply a tutor so I struggled to keep him up with the work while working outside the home.  The first 2 meds did nothing.  I called medical helplines galore and a nurse told me Bentyl worked for her son so I called the doc and asked if we could try it. (It's sad that I have to do the research for him.)  It helps some but it prevents you from sweating and can cause heat exhaustion according to the Physicians Desk Reference and we live in Florida.  So my son is constantly hot and his face is beet red because he's not perspiring at all.  Their response is to stop taking it to see if he's still hot.  That will go over real big with him.  I think I'll wait til the weekend to try that!  Anyway, I can relate to your frustration.  My son is finally back to school but it's a struggle and after a while you feel so alone-not much help from the docs.  Oh, I'm curious if they'll answer you here.  They wouldn't answer my question about my son because he was a child.  Good luck to you and your daughter.
