Recurrent PBC Post Liver Transplant.

Recurrent PBC Post Liver Transplant.

I was diagnosed with PBC in 1989 and received a liver transplant in 1991 at age 41. I had an excellent recovery and was back to work in three months. My liver functions and enzymes were absolutely normal until July,1998, following a bad intestinal infection.  Since then they hovered just above normal except for my alk phos which increased moderately, but steadily.  Biopsy last week showed beginning damage to the bile ducts and other indices of PBC. Are there any other cases of recurrent PBC out there? studies on prognosis or efficacy of treatment the second time round? Linda

Dear Linda,
At one time, the changes of liver rejection (bile duct destruction) were confused with those of recurrent PBC.  You should discuss with your transplant hepatologist, the possibility of rejection.  For detailed information regarding the prognosis and treatment for recurrent PBC after liver transplant, I suggest that you repost you rquestion to the hepatitis forum.
