Reflux

Do any of the drugs I take effect the likelihood of my reflux worsening? I take Betaloc, Natrilix, Lovan, Prepulsid Forte and Somac. My reflux is very bad and has exceptionally bad cough and vomiting occurring with it.
  Many thanks,
  Beryl
Dear Beryl,
The drugs that worsen reflux decrease lower esophageal sphincter pressure, thus allowing for material in the stomach to be refluxed into the esophagus and cause damage to the lining of the foodpipe. The drugs that lower esophageal sphincter pressure belong to the following categories: anti-cholingerics, sedatives, tranquilizers, theophylline, progesterone or progesterone containing birth control pills, nitates, beta-adrenergic agonists, alpha-adrenergic antagonists and calcium channel blockers. Review your list of medications with your physician to see if they fall under the above listed categories. I could not find some of the medications you listed in the Physician's Desk Reference and therefore, I am listing the general categories of medications that decrease lower esophageal sphincter pressure. It is also important to note that lifestyle and dietary modifications are also an integral part of any anti-reflux treatment program. I hope you find this information helpful.
