Results of liver tests

I have read that AST/ALT ratio is a good indicator of liver disease.  In particular, any ratio higher than 1 can be a sign of
liver damage.  Can that be the case even if both AST and ALT are well within normal range, or does it only pertain to elevated numbers?

My AST is 31 u/l and ALT is 22 u/l, ratio is 1.4       bilirubin is 0.8 mg/dl

My doctor shows no concern regarding these numbers since they are well within the normal range.  I do drink alcohol -  between 10 and 20 drinks per week.   Should the ratio concern me even with these numbers?

I agree that liver disease is less likely with the numbers you gave.

If there is further concern about liver disease, an abdominal ultrasound is recommended.

Testing the liver enzymes periodically can be done to ensure they are not rising.
