Scleroderma related problems

Are there any tests (aside from a regular blood test)
that will confirm whether a person has scleroderma?
ie. fluid from an affected joint, biopsy or some
non-invasive test?  If one has scleroderma, where is
the best place to get treatment?  What kind of doctor
should you see, since scleroderma affects so many
parts of the body.  Is there any test that can be done
for the esophegus to determine if scleroderma is causing
difficulty in swallowing?  A diagnosis of hiatal hernia
was previously given.  No test have been repeated in the
last three years.  Other symptoms have manifested.

dear Trisha W,
The diagnosis of scleroderma is usually made when a number of symptoms are present.  Tight skin on the hands and face in conjunction with  telangiectasia can be indicative skin changes.  Arthralgias, Raynauds phenomenon can also be signs for scleroderma.
Esophageal involvement usually presents with motility disorders and reflux.  Peristalsis (esophageal contractions)in the esophagus is absent and the lower esophageal pressure is reduced.  Anesophageal motility study, which measures muscle pressure in the esophagus, can provide data to suggest a diagnosis.
If you beleive that you have scleroderma, then you should be evaluated by a rheumatologist.
