Spasm

Spasm

Over the last six to eight months there has been a slight stiffness in my upper left abdominal area. A little above and left of my navel. I chalked it up to a muscular problems. Now I am experiencing a spasm in the same area. It feels like a twitch that grips something, perhaps a muscle. It feels deep as opposed to on the surface.  There is no pain associated with it. It has become rather unnerving. It is not something that is constant but when it does begin it usually stays for 30 minutes. It comes on  at least  two or three times daily. Is this something for concern or just a muscular problem that will resolve itself eventually?

Esophageal spasms are an uncommon disorder that can lead to this symptom.

GERD, gastritis, or an ulcer can also lead to upper abdominal discomfort.

You can consider an upper GI series or upper endoscopy to evaluate for these conditions.

Esophageal spasms can be evaluated with motility studies.  This is a more specialized test that is normally arranged in conjunction with a GI consult.

These options can be discussed with your personal physician.

Followup with your personal physician is essential.
