Sphincter of Oddi Dysfunction

Sphincter of Oddi Dysfunction

I am a 36yr old male.  I had my gallbladder removed over a year ago.  I have had both endoscopy and colonoscopy with negative results within the past 6 months.  My question is that I am beginning to experience similar symptoms to what I had prior to gallbladder surgery.  Specifically, a spasm sensation in my epigastric region that happens sparodically but seems to be excerbated any time I eat food with high fat content.  At this point I suspect the possibility of sphincter of oddi dysfunction.  Are the spasms I am feeling a symptom of SOD?  Thanks for your assistance.

It's possible.

An ultrasound can be done as an initial test.  If inconclusive, the definitive test would be Sphincter of Oddi manometry, which can be done in conjunction with an ERCP.

A referral to an academic-based GI physician is recommended to discuss these diagnostic options.

These options can be discussed with your personal physician.
