Stomach pain

For several months I have had a dull pain in my stomach (just below my left rib). My stomach makes a frequent load gurgling sounds after I eat or drink. My impression is that it is caused by gas, because the dull pain is less when I stand up. If I wake at night, I usually need to stay up because the pain persist.
I am 62 years old.

Most common causes for upper GI discomfort (known as dyspepsia) can include GERD, inflammation of the upper digestive tract, an ulcer or a bacteria known as H Pylori.  You may also want to consider pancreatic or gallbladder disease.

Tests to evaluate for this would include an upper GI series or upper endoscopy (which is the more comprehensive test).  I would also be tested for H Pylori (can be done as a blood test or during the upper endoscopy).

If those tests are negative, further tests to consider would be an abdominal ultrasound or CT scan.  A 24-hr pH study can be considered to evaluate for GERD.

I would discuss these considerations wtih your personal physician.

Followup with your personal physician is essential.
