Swallowing problems - Gerd????

Hi!  I just stumbled onto this site as I am desperately seeking help with a problem I am having. I apologize in advance for long length.  I got a piece of lettuce lodged in my throat last Friday evening which required a trip to the ER.  An endoscopy was not done after the food "moved" (or was swallowed) and I returned home.  Since then I have had a lump in the base of my  throat which seems to go from one side to the other and have been unable to eat any solid food because it gets stuck.  I had an endoscopy yesterday which showed no obstructions or abnormalities.  The specialist prescribed Levsin SL to be taken under the tongue before meals to ease what he thinks are "unexplained" spasms.  My throat is worse than ever this morning and don't know if I should just live with this or sound the bell with my MD that something is really wrong.  I read the archives here and saw a mention of "Gerd".  Could this be my issue?  I am a very healthy, 40 year old aerobics and weight lifting nut with no weight or other health issues.  Thanks in advance.

I have had GERD from a hiatial hernia and it can cause what feels like a throat obstruction, when it is actually acid splashing very high up in your esophogus. Try some Tums and see if it helps, if it does tell your doctor and he may prescribe something for acid control.

There is a term to describe the lump in your throat.  It is called "globus".  It usually does not correlate with any structual abnormality but more of an abnormal sensation.  This can be related to acid reflux (GERD) even if you have no typical heartburn/indigestion symtoms (symptoms).  Many times they will place you on high dose acid suppression (GERD is the nubmer one cause of this).  Other times a low dose antispasmotic (Levsin) is helpful (spasm or dys-motility is the next most common cause).

If you have not had a full consulation with a gastroenterologist (not just a scope), get one.  We even use ear, nose and throat doctors if we can't see to make this go away.

Hi, I'm a 19 yr old college student, and for the past few months I've had the sensation that I need to HAWK a luggie.  Like there is mucus stuck down there, and I do this every few minutes to no avail.  Its extremely frusterating.  And within the past month I've noticed a problem when I drink liquids.  Like its not quit going down, and I feel I need to burp, but I can't seem to do it.  I try and move around, lean forward, do whatever, until finally a burp comes.  But soon after, I feel I need to again.  Alot of times I try to burp and food starts to come up.  And after I drink liquids and try and burp, the liquid comes up, along with a little bit of a burning sensation.  I've been reading as much as I can to find out what is wrong.  I don't have the money to go to a doctor unless I have no other choice, so I'm just looking for some answers.  If anyone can help, please let me know.
